The essence of things
A Vitra Design Museum exhibi- tion, Weil am Rhein, 20.03.2010 – 19.09.2010
It is in the nature of human beings to seek the simplest solution. In fact, the idealism of “edle Einfalt” (noble sim- plicity) and “stille Größe” (quiet grandeur) predates classicism and the “Less is More” principle of modern design has remained a guiding notion through the postmodernist era up to the present. The exhibition “The Essence of things. Design and the Art of Reduction” illuminates the influ- ences and motifs of a principle whose impact on design transcends time and place. The diversity of this phenome-
non is documented in such examples as the legendary Thonet chair “No. 14“, furniture and product design by Gerrit Rietveld, Le Corbusier, the Eames, Max Bill, Dieter Rams, Shiro Kuramata and Jasper Morrison up to the iPod. In the exhibition, these ob- jects will be complemented by photos from the fields of architecture, fashion and art. Despite all the rationalisation of method and material, concentra- tion on functional essentials and abstraction of shape up to the very disappearance of things, the principle of simplicity demonstrates its great complexity. Curator of the exhibition is Mathias Schwartz-Clauss.
Sponsored exhibitions
To mark the launch of its collabora- tion with the internationally renowned Vitra Design Museum, Hi-Cone, one of the world’s leading packaging companies, is sponsoring no fewer than two exhibitions that can be seen first in the Vitra Design Museum in Weil on the River Rhine and will then move from there to other international venues. The start of the cooperation is the opening of the exhibition entitled “The Essence of Things. Design
and the Art of Reduction” on 20 March. The Hi-Cone system is on display in the exhibition, which ex- plores the influences and motives of the principle of simplicity, which has had such a huge impact on de- sign across time and space. A second exhibition, which is sched- uled to open in August 2010, is devoted to the “Heroes of Every- day Life” and the genius of the many small, unobtrusive but oh so useful objects.

Visitors could walk through the installation and see first-hand that in the future lighting will no longer have to be produced from just one central point by individual luminaires. Where conventional luminaire designs dictated lighting design in the past, OLEDs will provide unprecedented

creative freedom in the future. OLEDs open up completely new possibilities for architects, lighting planners and designers –any object, piece of furniture, wall, ceiling, or window can be turned into a light source. Even illuminating surfaces such as lit ceilings and partition walls are feasible with OLED technology. The future of lighting has already be- gun – OLED technology turns light into an experience.
