Dolphin central
Dolphinaris at Ventura Park is not alone in offering dolphin experiences to tourists in Quintana Roo. The Mexican state, which borders Central America, is the part of that country with the highest concentration of dolphinariums, and is emerging as leading destination within Latin America when it comes to this kind of recreation. Between them, Dolphinaris, Delphinus and Dolphin
Discovery offer more than 20 places where visitors can interact with cetaceans. Swimming with the dolphins is the most popular activity, and typically each experience lasts around one hour. Delphinus has six outlets in Quintana Roo:
Interactive Aquarium Cancun, Delphinus Hyatt Ziva (also
Cancun), Delphinus Puerto Morelos, Delphinus Xcaret Delphinus Xel-Ha and Riviera Maya Delphinus, which operates the Via Delphi Institute that conducts research on aquatic mammals. Dolphin Discovery, which has been dedicated to the study and
conservation of dolphins for the past 20 years, has 24 parks worldwide. Its 12 Mexican sites include Dolphin Discovery Cancun, Dolphin Discovery Cozumel, where visitors can also interact with other species such as sea lions and manatees, Dolphin Discovery Costa Maya, Dolphin Discovery Playa del Carmen, Tolum Dolphin Discovery Akumal and, its most exclusive location, Dreams Puerto Aventuras. Ventura Entertainment's Dolphinaris brand, meanwhile, has six outlets.
As well as the new Ventura Park location, it also offers dolphin encounters at Cozumel, Cancun, the Riviera Maya, Tulum and Barceló. Due to the importance such attractions have to tourism locally in Quintana
Roo, the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums chose Cancun as the location for its annual meeting last month. The industry association provides strict guidelines that seek to ensure the welfare of marine mammals, dolphinarium visitors and their staff.
