That record-breaking 52m loop
Just the start of things to come The region’s first Wing Coaster, which was officially opened on February 24, may be latest addition to the Ferrar World Abu Dhabi, but it will not be the last in 2016. A launch coaster from Intamin and an ambitious multi-movement SFX Coaster from Dynamic Attractions will open later in the year. “We are starting 2016 with the biggest ride unveiling since our grand opening,” notes FWAD general manager Jesse Vargas. “This coaster will surprise guests with never- before experienced thrills and further cements Ferrari World Abu Dhabi’s reputation as a pioneer in the region’s leisure and entertainment industry. A theme park evolution on this scale is unheard of and we are so proud to bring even more fun to one of Abu Dhabi’s premier leisure destinations, Yas Island. When guests visit the park, they will get a sense of the evolution taking place under our iconic red roof. The expansion will amaze guests with more thrilling and exciting attractions." "Ferrari World wanted an exciting coaster with many
attractive elements matching the “ace of aces” story and the movements of a bi-plane,” recalls Intamin's executive vice- president, Sascha Czibulka. "Among the biggest challenges
The new coaster,
with Yas Waterworld in the backgrounnd
were the design and installation of the lift. Unlike standard lift hills on other rollercoasters, where the lift is supported by many single columns, the approximately 65m tall lift of Flying Aces is supported by just two columns. With this unique design, the top of the lift looks like a huge free hanging arch."
No sweat! "Another challenging factor," Czibulka continues, "was the hot temperature during the long summer in Abu Dhabi. During the detailed calculations of the ride, the expansion of the steel had to be considered. It's something Intamin is pretty familiar with, since Formula Rossa has been in operation at Ferrari World since 2008 and successfully coping with the high temperature day after day.” Together with new attractions introduced in 2014/15,
the ongoing expansion at FWAD is expected to increase the park’s overall capacity by 40%, reduce waiting times and enhancing the overall guest experience. The last two years’ additions included the Karting Academy, where guests can challenge one another in electric powered go karts, the Ferrari California Driving Experience and a new soft play area within Junior Training Camp. But the really big stuff is happening in 2016, and in the process it will more than double Ferrari World’s coaster count in less than one year, to five in total. “We are very proud of our expansion’s progress to date
and how close we are to achieving our goal," concludes Vargas. "There hasn’t been a theme park that has been adding to its offerings at the pace we are setting. The amount we have invested in our expansion is roughly the same it would cost to open a new park. We are confident that the new rides and attractions will satisfy our guests’ thirst for family excitement and white knuckle thrills.”

World’s fastest coaster
where next? It’s over five years since Formula Rossa opened at Ferrari World – and the LSM-launched ride is still the world’s fastest rollercoaster. Park World asked Intamin’s Sascha Czibulka when and where he thought the record might be broken. "Who's next to beat the record?" he pondered. "Obviously, someone with deep pockets! Seriously, the uniqueness and especially the marketing value of such a coaster – and the operators of Ferrari World can absolutely prove this statement – is immense and absolutely worth the investment. In most cases of the larger scale theme park developments nowadays, it actually would make some sense to invest such a one-of-a-kind attraction. And since rollercoasters are still the most popular attractions at amusement and theme parks, the question of which type of ride is easily answered.” Sascha would say that of course, but what about our original question? “When will we see that the world’s fastest record being broken? “We will see..." is all he will say!
