Flying Aces Ferrari World’s all-new record-setting coaster

The UAE park that still proudly boasts the world’s fastest rollercoaster (Formula Rossa by Intamin) has just opened another impressive attraction from the Swiss manufacturer. Paul Ruben profiles Flying Aces at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, featuring the world’s tallest loop and steepest starting hill inclination

Hersheypark in Pennsylvania, the layout of Flying Aces is unique. The ride’s 51° lift hill inclination is the steepest on any non-vertical lift coaster. Whisking riders to the top at 29kmh (18 mph), the cable lift is also the fastest. The non- inverted loop that follows stands 52-metres (171ft) over Yas Island, the Abu Dhabi entertainment hub that is home to both Ferrari World and its sister waterpark, Yas Waterworld.

F The ride begins, of course, with that speedy lift, which

brings the wide trains quickly to the highest point of the coaster at 63m (207ft). The train then dives to the first

valley reaching its top speed of 120kmh (75 mph) and continues to and through the impressive non-inverted loop. The train follows the gravity run along exciting over-banked curves, airtime hills, and high speed humps and finishes with a corkscrew and a cheeky airtime S- hump before hitting the brakes. Riders experience an almost 2.5 minute ride along 1.5km (4,921ft) of white track (the same colour scheme as Formula Rossa). The hourly capacity with its two winged trains each seating up to 28 passengers is approximately 1,000 passengers. The train, says an FWAD spokesperson, imitates the

movement of a bi–plane, around which the front car is themed in keeping with the story behind Ferrari’s Cavallino logo, which was inspired by Italy’s "ace of aces," the aviator Count Francesco Baracca. His legendary Prancing Horse emblem was inherited by Enzo Ferrari for good luck, and can be found emblazoned over the large roof of Ferrari World. Only the loading area of the new coaster, however, is located undercover, and access to it is available by heading off towards the right once through the park’s entrance.
