CREATING JOBS IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY

Automotive manufacturing has recovered well from its production low point in 2010 and despite some levelling off over recent months, predictions for the next few years look extremely positive. The Fuelling Growth report on the automotive supply chain published by Lloyds Bank at the end of 2014 found that over ¾ companies expect to grow 25% over the next two years, creating an estimated 50,000 jobs within the industry. Furthermore, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), vehicle manufacturing is predicted to reach record breaking levels by 2017. Set up in 1966, The Autins Group is a manufacturer of thermal and

acoustic insulation materials for the automotive industry, and is an example of how smaller manufacturers have weathered the economic downturn – and emerged stronger than ever. Managing director, Jim Griffin, takes up the story: “It became clear

that we needed a viable business plan for growth. Joining the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses programme helped us to achieve this. Encouraged by our success, we also opted into the GrowthAccelerator programme – a government backed programme which helps SMEs with growth potential to expand by offering advice from experts in areas such as growth strategy, funding and investment, and developing people within an organisation. “When I discussed plans for growth with my GrowthAccelerator mentor,

he convinced me to take a different path to access the funding we needed – and it really paid off. The scheme gave us access to an impartial, external perspective, with alternative ways of doing things. “We have found that it’s important to share your vision for the business

and to articulate it to those around you with confidence. We worked hard to ensure that the management team was an integral part of the business, rewarding performance and achievement. We now have robust 13 week cash flows updated and investigated weekly whilst our forward planning over three years gives us a clear vision of any potential future problems.” The Fuelling Growth study also reported a desire of companies in the

automotive industry to expand into new markets, with over two thirds identifying this as a priority for 2015. Again, this is a strategy that has been key to growth for The Autins Group which opened its first overseas sites in Sweden and Germany during the past two years and has diversified into other areas of material manufacturing with its Decibex flooring range.

Griffin concludes: “It’s a great time to be involved in the automotive

manufacturing industry, creating jobs, contributing to our local community and exploring new markets.” www.autins.co.uk
