Suitable for use in machine tools, modern rotary tables and diverse handling applications, the Vigo Drive gear heads of the RH-N series from Nabtesco Precision Europe are based on the

company’s lightweight and compact RV-N cycloidal gears. According to the company, these low maintenance gear heads achieve high levels of torque performance and a high degree of precision. They also enable fast and easy integration in the drive train, and their modular design with defined interfaces provides for maximum flexibility. Since a pinion and motor flange for all standard motor types are already integrated in the gear head, the new series offers an uncomplicated plug-and-play solution. In machine tools the RH-N series can be used either with shaft or case rotation. The series is available from Nabtesco in different sizes with rated torques from 245 to 22,500 Nm for diverse applications.

Available in the UK from Techdrives, Vogel phase shifting gearboxes have a second input shaft which suits slow movement of the output shaft with low input power. This, the company explains, is used as an emergency drive if the main drive fails. The in-built high ratio from the worm gear means that the required input torque is low and alternatives to electric motors can be used such as air motors or even hand winding. The gearboxes are available for output torques in the range 15 to 1500Nm. Ratios

from input to output for the main drives are one, two or three, while the ratios for the worm gear input range from 40 to 138. Phase shifting gearboxes – also known as speed superimposition gearboxes – are basically a planetary gearbox, however the outer toothed ring can be rotated through a worm drive. This is often used to adjust the phase between input and output, or for speed superimposition by applying continuous rotation of the worm gear. When the gearbox input is stopped, perhaps due to a power failure, input of the worm gear gives slow rotation of the output shaft, explains Techdrives.


Multi-axis milling machines and vertical lathes need to be able to perform various operations to the highest accuracy. To help, Redex has released a new drive solution for the rotary tables of multi-axis milling machines. According to the company, the high-speed versions of its DRP, KRP and KRPX ranges complement the features of its MSR range of drives. Not only do they simplify the design of the

mechanical transmission systems of both large rotary tables used on vertical lathes (over 2000m) and smaller tables used on milling machines, but they improve machine accuracy and allow for smaller machine footprints. The high-speed versions of the DRP, KRP and KRPX feature Redex high-performance

planetary reducers. When meshed with a drive gear, the two reducers on Redex TwinDrive and DualDrive solutions cancel 100% of backlash, guaranteeing the accuracy and momentum of the drives, the company explains. These high-speed reducers have been ‘hardened’ to allow continuous operating

cycles and meet the specific requirements of rotary tables. This enables the high-speed TwinDrive and DualDrive units to achieve rotational speeds of up to 28 rpm-1. While the Redex MSR range offers higher rotational speeds, the high-speed versions

of its DRP, KRP and KRPX drives offer greater accuracy, rigidity and momentum. According to the company, it is the only manufacturer of one-of-a-kind integrated drive systems for rotary tables on vertical turning lathes. The features offered by its high-performance reducers, and the association of these in TwinDrive or DualDrive mode, are said to result in high positioning accuracy. They also make it possible to execute additional functions on the C-axis without any additional mechanical devices or the use of position locking. This maximum accuracy is maintained during milling and/or positioning operations particularly by the electrical or mechanical preload system, which continuously manages the counter-torque between the pinions. Solutions that use two reducers, and thus two motors, are said to be more cost

effective and easier to manage. Compared to the heavy-duty rotary tables used in conventional configurations that require a 160kW motor, the TwinDrive solution uses two 80kW motors, which are more standard and often less expensive. Furthermore, this dramatically simplifies rotary-table design because it eliminates the need for machine-tool manufacturers to design and build their own gearboxes with all the necessary components, the company adds.



GEARMOTORS LAUNCHED Now available from Mclennan is Micro-Motors’ PS150, a 30mm diameter planetary brushed DC gearmotor range. This compact precision grade gearmotor has a 12 or 24V

DC nominal voltage rating and is available in a choice of 13 gear ratios from 3.4:1 to 87.7:1. Nominal torque through the range is from three to 250 Ncm. With its durable aluminium housing and 6mm diameter output shaft with dual bearing support, the high torque-to- size gearmotor has a maximum shaft load rating of 50N axial and 200N radial at 10mm from the front fixing flange. The PS150 complements the larger E192 and P205 series planetary gearheads from Micro Motors. According to the company, the integral brushed DC motors

include interference suppression electronics and feature rear output shafts for optional two-phase Hall-effect encoders or alternative position sensors. Motor termination is via spade terminals and encoders have connectors with flying leads for straightforward installation.
