LapSafe deliver and install the Diplomat LMS Laptop loan system at the University of the West of England, Bristol

LAPSAFE DIPLOMAT LMS AIDS DIGITAL ADVANCEMENT AT UWE

STEEPED IN CENTURIES of enterprise and innovation, the city of Bristol is a great place to learn and gain experience. With over 28,000 students and 3,000 staff over three campuses, the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) has a mission to equip their students for successful futures. Ensuring the University is digitally advanced and ensuring their students have the best possible university experience, the staff continue to look for new innovative technology to support that ideal. For a few years now the

University has been using LapSafe®’s Mentor™ trolley to store and charge laptops which they then manually loan to students to use whilst in the library, however this was becoming difficult to manage due to staff time restraints and they needed to look for an alternative solution. A tender was submited to find a secure self-service laptop loan system that could link to the University’s Library Management System, Symphony. It was imperative that the self- service device they were looking for possessed a report function so they could monitor loans. Following conversations with other universities Danny Wong, IT support coordinator at UWE Bristol, visited Aston University in Birmingham to view the LapSafe® Diplomat™ LMS self-service loan lockers that they are using; he also visited another university

where an alternative had been installed. On price, support and functionality the tender was won by LapSafe® Products and in July 2013 the process to deliver and install the Diplomat LMS Laptop loan system at UWE Bristol began. Three campuses required

laptops to be loaned to students, so working with LapSafe® UWE Bristol decided that a 36-bay Diplomat™ LMS for MacBooks would be installed at their Bower Ashton Campus, a 36-bay laptop unit would be installed at their Glenside Campus and a 96-bay laptop unit would be installed in the library at the Frenchay Campus. Danny Wong said: “UWE Bristol

is on a continual quest to improve the student experience. Having the LapSafe Diplomat™ LMS has ticked many boxes for us; it is very secure,

easy to use and runs smoothly. The students are now able to borrow a laptop for up to 24 hours if they wish by using their library card, and it is not dependent on staff being present. This means that students have access to resources regardless whether staff are present or not. The students were a litle unsure at first, but as time has passed they have seen how good the technology is and they now enjoy the freedom it gives them to be able to study when and where they like.” Danny Wong continued: “The

delivery and installation was very straightforward and the whole thing has been a very positive experience. LapSafe® Products have the advantage of being here in the UK; it has been easy to get good customer support when it’s been required.” UB
