UCISA LAUNCH ASSESSMENT TOOLKIT

By Mark Ritchie, Deputy Director and Head of Project Services, University of Edinburgh

S

uccessfully delivering major business and IT change projects is notoriously fraught with diffi culties. In complex

and highly devolved organisations such as universities and colleges the challenges can be even more signifi cant! Recognising these challenges, and the

importance of successfully managing change in the fast moving higher education sector, UCISA established a new Project and Change Management Group earlier this year. The new group brings together professional staff from across the UK HE sector to develop and promote best practice in all aspects of project and change management. The fi rst major deliverable from the

new group is a toolkit aimed at improving the governance of major projects. The Major Project Governance Assessment

Toolkit has been developed to assist staff who are managing or participating in major change projects.

The toolkit provides:  guidance on assessing which projects should be classed as Major Projects  the key governance elements that must be managed for Major Projects  an assessment tool to help ensure that the required governance actions are established and work eff ectively throughout the life of the project  a visualisation tool for project governance  case studies on the use of the toolkit at the University of Edinburgh. The toolkit has been designed to be

complementary to existing project and change management processes and can be used as a checklist for any project. The

toolkit fi lls an important gap by providing a repeatable assessment process

that covers all aspects of governance for major projects – something that project sponsors and project boards have been asking for in most

universities for some time! The toolkit is published in both PDF and Microsoft Word versions and the Microsoft Word version can be customised to meet local

institutional requirements. We believe that the toolkit provides common sense guidance that will help support bet er management of project and change initiatives and ultimately greater benefi ts for students and staff .

The toolkit is available for download from the UCISA website at ht p:// www.ucisa.ac.uk/publications/ major_project_gov.aspx
