What is the Value

The University of Westminster (UoW) is embracing the smartphone revolution by allowing students and staff access to the academic timetable for 2014/15 via their mobile devices. Using CMISGo from

Advanced Learning (Advanced), the timetable was made available to 27,000 students and more than 4,000 staff via their smartphones in August. This is the earliest ever

publication of the UoW’s academic timetable. It is also the fi rst time UoW has published this information via mobile devices. Students and academic staff will also be able to share diaries and course information via their smartphones,

enhancing their ability to collaborate. A self-service room

booking facility which allows students and staff to reserve teaching and study space across the University’s estate via their smartphones (using CMISGo) has also been introduced. Professor Rikki Morgan-

Tamosunas, Deputy Vice- Chancellor, University of Westminster, commented: “CMISGo will be key to improving the management of resources across our four campuses, each of which accommodates social learning spaces as well as lecture theatres and seminar rooms, alongside laboratories, studios and corporate accommodation.”

The language of music

New software now launched by researchers at Birmingham City University aims to reduce the long periods of training and expensive equipment required to make music, whilst also giving musicians more intuitive control over the music that they produce. The developed software, showcased

at the British Science Festival, trains computers to understand the language of musicians when applying eff ects to their music. The software uses artifi cial intelligence

to allow a computer to perceive sounds like a human being. The development

of the software was motivated by the lack of statistically-defi ned transferable semantic terms in music production. Dr Ryan Stables, lecturer in

audio engineering and acoustics at Birmingham City University and lead researcher on the SAFE project, said: “Musicians can often spend their whole lives mastering their instrument, but then when they come to the production stage, it’s very diffi cult for them to produce a well-recorded piece of music. The SAFE project aims to overcome this and gives musicians and music production novices the ability to be creative with their music.”

types of organisations at ract, understand and engage with their audience. • 77% of internet users now use social networks • 77% of Facebook users would use it for social login • 75% of internet users agree that organisations off ering social login are more up to date and innovative • 84% of internet users would leave a website when they have forgot en login information, but if social login was an option, 72% of these users would stay • Websites off ering social login show a 33% increase in new registrations • Users spend 56% more time on websites off ering social login. This trend has profound implications for the HE sector, with major potential for enhanced engagement ultimately driving revenues. Consider this; to request a prospectus,

A

most universities require users to complete an online form, yet Gartner estimates that 62% of users will abandon such a process. Compare this to the potential 33% increase in new registrations through social login, and the benefi ts in terms of harvesting potential new students are clear. Social login also improves engagement

with students, throughout the lifecycle from pre-applicant to alumni. A typical university receives around £1,000,000/annum through alumni donations, so an increase of just 20%, achieved through enhanced engagement through social identities, would represent £200,000/annum additional revenue. Given these benefi ts, the question is

why would a university not be looking at implementing social login? IDENTify from ProofID allows Universities

to reap the benefi ts of social login for the whole student lifecycle, from pre-applicants to alumni. Join us for a webinar at 10.30am on 23 October. To reserve your place please email: info@proofi d. co.uk W: www.proofi d.co.uk T: 0161 212 1170
