anaging a university sports facility is tough enough without complicating things at the first
hurdle. Much like the students at your university and their assignments, you need a clear plan and a sturdy foundation before you can build something of substance. If you’re looking to reinvent your sports facility or improve your current offering, the Sports and Play Construction Association (SAPCA) is essential to any project. SAPCA is the recognised trade
association for the sports and play construction industry in the UK. Its 240 members are all veted and approved by the Association every year to ensure that industry standards are being continually raised. Any university considering creating, developing or maintaining a sports facility should make SAPCA its first port of call. Recent examples of SAPCA members’
expertise within university sports facility development can be seen in the following case studies.
Oxford Brookes University Oxford Brookes is one of the UK’s leading modern universities with an international reputation for excellence
Why choose a SAPCA member?
As the recognised trade association for the sports and play construction industry in the UK, SAPCA boasts some of the strongest industry links to quality, approved contractors, consultants and suppliers throughout the country. SAPCA members’ latest builds boost university sports facilities across the UK
in sport. So when it needed an artificial turf pitch refurbishing following heavy usage, it had to be of a high standard. SAPCA contractor S&C Slater were
appointed to deliver a comprehensive refurbishment and extension of an existing 5,725m2 artificial turf sports pitch at the Oxford Brookes University Centre of Sports. This included the removal and replacement of the existing shock pad and turf, relocation of the dugouts, and an extension to the pitch for spectator viewing areas. The venue also wanted help identifying opportunities to increase value for money and design solutions to achieve this. S&C Slater led the client through
each stage of the project and delivered an outstanding pitch, which, hopefully, will host play to the same impressive level.
Brunel University Brunel University has recently chosen Agrostis to design, specify, procure and project manage the installation of an international-class natural turf rugby pitch and a training area. Working with the construction
contractor Kestrel, on the main pitch they undertook all the groundwork and
drainage, providing the surface with a sand carpet, carefully blended with the upper section of the topsoil, and sown seeds. A blend of rye with smooth-stalked meadow grass and fescue was chosen for maximum durability.
University of Kent When the University of Kent experienced a surge in demand for tennis and netball, they wanted a new building that would allow them to get the most for their money without compromising on quality. A Challenger™ facility by Lancashire-
based family firm Collinson plc was chosen, which is a clear span, steel superstructure, requiring minimal foundations and quick erection. This modular system is covered with a tensioned PVC membrane and the University opted for a white roof which allows light to permeate the building, flooding the courts with natural light, giving the effect of playing outdoors without the weather implications. The 52m long x 35m wide facility
makes use of energy efficient lighting and ventilation systems to maximise play potential and has proved to be a massive hit with players. UB
