EAUC
membership provides sustainability learning and networking opportunities for your students
Engaging and enabling the leaders of tomorrow – your students
T
eaching and developing students that are fit for purpose, to be responsible, accountable and informed global citizens in any profession, is of utmost importance. Graduate atributes,
and the student experience are regular topics of discussion for universities and colleges. In late 2013, the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC) opened student access to Membership, and now has over 200 students involved. Engaging students to help embed
sustainability into their institutions is a key driver of the sustainability agenda in the sector. There is increasing awareness of the necessity to deliver a holistic, topical curriculum, of which sustainability must be a part of, if not embedded into. The EAUC’s powerful Member-only service, Learning in Future Environments (www.
eauc.org.uk/life), places links to the curriculum at the heart of this planning and self-assessment tool, to truly improve an institution’s environmental and social performance, for their most important audience. The EAUC aims to help develop graduates who are taught to
critically think, and cultivate courage, ambition and persistence to challenge standard routes and views of sustainability. The EAUC believes fresh, innovative solutions are required to tackle the global problems of today and tomorrow, so teaching students to make informed, effective decisions is pivotal.
EAUC Membership for students offers a wide range of services, tools and support: Students can participate in webinars, on a range of topics to improve their sustainability knowledge and obtain new ideas for projects They can champion and support sustainability initiatives in their institution, through volunteering, raising awareness and powerful engagement methods
There is an abundance of case studies, good practice and knowledge dissemination at their fingertips with Membership The support of a network of like-minded champions.
The success and outcomes of students joining EAUC Membership are apparent. There is a growing cohort of engaged and interested students helping to drive sustainable activity in their institutions. An important student engagement initiative has been the NUS Students’ Green Fund. The EAUC has arranged a four part NUS Students’ Green Fund webinar series to showcase the projects and benefits of this programme, focusing on employability, community engagement, engaging academics and student engagement. View the podcasts at
www.eauc.org.uk/events. Institutions have approached student
engagement in sustainability in different ways. Common themes are around the use and benefits to students, building their CV, developing their networks professionally and personally and gaining transferable skills. The continuous growth and influence of the student movement has led to different approaches being tried and tested, and remains an area of constant evolvement. The EAUC and its strategic partners are working hard to strengthen this dialogue and offer a whole institution approach to embedding sustainability. More recently, the EAUC has invited student representation on the
Board of Trustees which raises the profile and voice of students, and strives to ensure their needs are incorporated into the future of the organisation. EAUC Membership is available to an unlimited number of staff and
students, so to get the most value out of Membership, involve your students for the benefit of the institution and its ongoing success. UB
