STUDENTS GET CONNECTED AT UWE


As students are spending more time than ever atached to wireless devices, being able to get online as soon as they arrive at university accommodation is essential. Learn more about this experience from two students studying at UWE.

laimed by UCAS to be the biggest intake of students to date, with numbers approaching 500,000, the


pressure to deliver high standards across all aspects of student accommodation is more apparent than ever. Students arriving at their accommodation expect to have immediate internet access to connect their ever growing number of devices. Wi-fi is no longer a luxury but has become a necessity students depend on in their day-to-day lives. With 16–24-year-olds spending 9 hours,


8 minutes each day on media devices, compared with the average night’s sleep of 8 hours, 21 minutes (OfCom 2014), it is clearly essential that the service is not only high speed, but also copes with the demands of today’s multi-tasking students and their multiple devices. Along with many other Universities and


commercial accommodation providers throughout the UK, the University of the West of England chose StudentCom to provide its internet service to its 3,000+ students staying in halls of residence. In addition to fast broadband and fully pervasive Wi-Fi throughout their


accommodation, this year’s students have also been able to take advantage of a number of new and enhanced features designed to get them online faster than ever before and improve their overall experience of the service. StudentCom’s Pre-arrival Registration has been a huge success with uptake up more than 100% on last year. This easy-to-use, online facility enables students to sign up in three simple steps before even arriving at university from the comfort of their home, meaning they have instant access when they arrive and one less thing to worry about. Speaking directly to the students


themselves, StudentCom found out how students staying on the


Frenchay campus at UWE have been geting on with their service. 1st year Sociology student Abigail


described the importance of being able to get online as soon as she arrived at the accommodation: “Arriving at university was very exciting, but there was a lot to do, so knowing I already had Wi-Fi thanks to the pre-arrival registration service was a great reassurance. In fact, I actually tweeted about my arrival on campus as soon as I walked through the door, and I practically live on Skype so the internet service has been great.” Vivienne, who studies Gaming


Technology, expressed the importance of a good internet service studying for her degree. “I have so many wireless devices which are useful for my course, so having fast and reliable Wi-Fi is essential for me. I chose to upgrade to the 40Mbs broadband which has been great as I don’t experience any lag when I’m playing games. I’m guaranteed smooth play.” It’s clear that students have become


dependent on Wi-Fi, which needs to be of a high standard in order to cope with all their devices. UB


I’m always updating my social media accounts or online shopping so connecting all my devices is really important. Being able to do this anywhere on campus is great because we are still being sociable. Abigail, 1st year Sociology student, UWE
