additives and masterbatches. It will be showing the fi rst prototypes of air-tight coffee
capsules made using a special grade of PBT that helps to seal in the aroma. The Ultradur B1520 FC food contact grade is claimed to combine excellent barrier properties against moisture and oxygen, and it contains the coffee aromas without the need for any additional coatings. Visitors to the BASF stand at Fakuma will sit on Brunner A-Chairs made using Ultramid B3EG10 SI, a new “surface-improved” polyamide developed for the furniture industry. The material combines high surface quality with excellent mechanical and chemical properties. An innovative new application of BASF’s thermoplas-
tic polyurethanes can be found in the Airbump protec- tive cladding on the Citroën C4 Cactus. The Elastollan AC 55D10 HPM grade was developed so that it can be applied in unpainted exterior applications. Other automotive applications on show on the BASF
stand will include the backrest for the front seat of BMW’s i3 electric car. The component is said to be the fi rst injection-moulded and unpainted structural seat component made of polyamide that has a visible surface. The hybrid component weighs only 2 kg and
uses Ultramid B3ZG8 UV, a particularly UV-stable PA 6 compound specially developed for applications of this type. BASF Color Solutions will be
presenting a wide range of masterbatch applications for colouring and stabilizing plastics. One focus is the colouring of engineering polymers with process- ing temperatures of up to 350°C, which makes temperature-resist- ance a critical factor. The Sicover- sal X masterbatches have been optimized for use with BASF’s Ultradur PBTs, and a number of applications will be on display.
