news Fillers provide food for thought


Hong Kong-based Ooobject has produced a range of pens made using bioplastics fi lled with different types of waste produced during food production and processing. At last month’s 100% Design exhibition in London, the company displayed pens made with 45 different types of natural reclaimed fi llers in loadings of around 30%. They included different types of fruit peel, nutshells, cereal husks, crustacean shells, and the bones of fi sh, cattle and chickens.


The pens were developed by Hong Kong-based Green & Associates, which owns the Ooobject brand. They are manufactured in China, where the food wastes are also sourced.


Ooobject specialises in supplying household


objects made using reclaimed and recycled materials. Its pens featuring bodies made from bioplastics fi lled with tea


grounds have been sold though the Word Wildlife Fund.


While the production of pen bodies is not a demanding polymer application, the variety of food waste used in the Ooobject


illustrates the very wide range of options available to compounders wanting to
