IN WITH THE NEW
Simon Fry rounds up the latest developments on campus for the new academic year
I
t’s not just students arriving for the start of the new academic year with new accoutrements. Many universities have installed new technology
and furniture while others are opening premises’ doors for the first time. Building work at two south west universities is ample
proof demand for a university education remains high. The champagne corks popped at Bath Spa University in June when Lord Putnam CBE atended the launch of its new ‘Learning Commons’ building at its Newton Park Campus. The building provides a range of spaces and rooms available to students and staff, including learning pods, soundproof editing suites and what will be the south west’s largest television studio. Lord Putnam CBE said: “Having walked around
Commons, the facilities are absolutely stunning. All of a sudden and for the first time in a long time, I wanted to be 18 years old again and going to university, it is quite remarkable. This wonderful digital facility will produce a lot of talented people, the sort of facility any university anywhere in the world would envy.” A large number of the university’s staff, students

FRESHERS LEAVING IT LATE
For freshers and returning undergraduates leaving it late, websites offer easy ways to ensure their room, bathroom and kitchen has the trappings needed for a happy varsity life. Jigsaw24 deals with over 1,000 schools, colleges and universities every month, and if there’s one change it has noticed over the past couple of years, it’s that students today are all about ‘touch’. Jigsaw24’s Education Business
Manager, Romero Howe, said: “Laptops and notebooks are falling by the wayside in favour of the faster, lighter iPad. Apple’s tablets do pretty much everything a laptop can, but add in a pair of cameras (great for recording evidence), enable any time, anywhere working without having to lug around a
charger, and give students access to thousands of free apps they can use to support their own learning and research.” And it’s not just students who
are taking up iPads. “Jigsaw24 has had great feedback from staff about resources like the iTunes U library and iBooks Author, which lets you create your own interactive textbooks and courses. They’ve also given a big thumbs up to CTOUCH’s multitouch displays, which replace traditional whiteboards with a large, interactive surface that supports up to four users at once, doesn’t need a projector or any costly bulbs, and can run any app your iPad or computer can. Well worth a new term.”
