THINK BIG WHEN IT COMES TO OVERSEAS STUDENTS By Mathew Ramus (pictured), Head of leading law firm Burges Salmon's Education practice

Overseas students play a key economic role for universities and increasing their numbers may be important if the new fees regime leads to a decrease in UK students. The challenge facing universities is how to lure more overseas students to the UK. To achieve this, universities need

to address two issues – making the university a dream destination for overseas students and making the process of those students starting (and completing) their studies in the UK as easy as possible. Many universities are already doing much to achieve these aims, but there is considerable scope for some innovative approaches. Such innovations might include

seting up overseas recruitment fairs and immigration clinics to help overseas nationals understand the mechanics of studying in the UK. Student delegations might be sent to key markets, such as Asia, to tell overseas nationals what it is like to live and study at a particular

university. Universities might

introduce bounty systems whereby students have reduced fees if they introduce overseas nationals to the university. Or in today’s world of technology, universities might create

multi-media interactive experiences to give overseas nationals a taste of university life. One recent approach has involved

Bath Spa University entering into a joint venture with a US recruitment business. This international partnership, known as the Pathway College, helps international students join mainstream university courses in years two and three and is expected to result in a considerable increase in Bath Spa's overseas student intake as well as greater retention. This approach by Bath Spa University to increase its overseas student numbers reflects the need for universities to think outside the box. With more and more universities

around the world competing for students, UK universities need to continue to develop commercial ways of atracting overseas talent. UB
