Opting for online

Andy Dowling from Digitary believes that paper-based processes prevent institutions from providing the level of service expected by today’s students

1

What do you think of the current methods employed by

universities to securely manage student qualifi cations? Typically, institutions represent student data electronically, however paper documents are still being used to share this information externally, with paper transcripts, award documents, and status let ers still commonplace. Paper is costly, ineffi cient, and susceptible to fraud. Fundamentally, paper prevents institutions from providing the level of service expected by today’s students and graduates.

2

Do you see a shift towards online management of secure

documents as opposed to the more traditional paper-based systems currently used? Yes. More and more institutions are migrating to electronic delivery of documents, driven by the implementation of the Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR). Naturally, institutions are also seeking to implement other documents electronically. The benefi ts are clear – reduced costs, greater effi ciencies, and a bet er service to students, graduates, and employers.

3

Does online documentation increase or reduce the threat

of security breach? An online solution, properly implemented, is more secure than paper. And while all online systems introduce risks, they can be managed. A cost eff ective, low-risk approach is to implement purpose-built, standards- compliant security solution such as Digitary, which has been proven at HE institutions for almost a decade. Although some institutions might implement in-house solutions, they take greater implementation risk in

doing so and can deliver a less comprehensive solution.

How is Digitary working to ensure the needs of the

market are met for secure document management? Our product roadmap is heavily infl uenced by the needs of our customers and of the wider higher education market. We’re currently focusing on a number of key areas: First, we’re implementing a

new cloud-based platform that is scheduled for release later this year. This will make it much easier to exchange digital documents and data online. Students and graduates of Digitary-enabled institutions will soon be able to start sharing their digital documents with third party online systems for graduate recruitment, admissions, and international student exchange. Institutions will also able to issue and receive Digitary documents into the graduate admissions process more easily. Secondly,

institutions face continued cost and

resourcing challenges as

other priorities compete for their at ention, and so we’re making it quicker, easier and more cost eff ective for institutions to migrate to Digitary. Institutions can start issuing and receiving Digitary documents within days of signup, while they phase in more complex integration aspects at their own pace. Finally, we’re helping

institutions to make the transition to more cost-eff ective cloud computing, while at the same time, addressing sensitivities around Data Protection. Digitary’s new hybrid architecture enables us to deliver the economic benefi ts of a cloud solution, while providing institutions the ability to store personal data in their preferred location.

5

Does online credential management off er more than

just ease of use to an institution? Yes, but the benefi ts gained depend on the quality of the implementation. For example, simple online document imaging cannot easily extract the underlying data for automated processing. Digitary technology digitally certifi es both documents and data, and can deliver both to authorised recipients with the explicit consent of the individual. In addition to providing strong data protection and security features, this approach enables automated processing by online recruitment engines and graduate admissions systems. Digitary therefore facilitates more streamlined processes, greater student and graduate mobility, and further cost savings. This secure, data-driven foundation is the very cornerstone of our very exciting product development roadmap, starting with the launch of our new cloud-based platform later this year. UB
