BIGBELLY SMARTBINS | PROMOTION | 13

HIGHLIGHTING YOUR GREEN CREDENTIALS W

ith the trend for sustainability one of the top action items on the global agenda, universities

must seize the opportunity to become innovators and knowledge leaders in this area. It is estimated that by 2030, the world’s population will reach 8.3 billion, with the world’s output of rubbish doubling in that time. Furthermore, with an estimated half

of the world’s population having access to online services by that time, new smart data management technologies will become a mission-critical tool for top management globally allowing our partners to beter understand how their universities work. Working in partnership with BigBelly

SmartBins, institutions such as Harvard, MIT, Trinity College Dublin, University of California San Diego and many others around the globe are helping revolutionise the way universities manage their public spaces and deal with waste and recycling. BigBelly’s smart- enabled dashboards allow access to real-time information, leading to proven financial results and benefiting both the environment and students alike. Due to its ability to hold up to eight times more waste than a standard bin, the BigBelly SmartBin can lead to up to 70% reduction in costs and a staggering 86% reduction in collections, helping reduce CO2 and minimising traffic disruption. The enclosed nature of the bin reduces liter-picking and keeps vermin and birds firmly way from rubbish, creating a noticeably cleaner public space for students to enjoy. Recycling is actively encouraged with dual stream kiosks and standalone recycle-only units.

The cloud-based CLEAN management

software system provides invaluable tools for management and staff alike. The analytics provided by the CLEAN Management system allow historic reporting and the collation of data gives management the opportunity to identify problem areas. Reductions in costs and collections can be obtained with the ability to monitor the current fill-level of each individual bin allowing structured runs on a just-in-time basis. Don Coughlan, CEO at BigBelly

SmartBin UK commented: “Universities are a key global partner to BigBelly, in many ways mirroring the challenges most global cities are facing: the demand for smart data driven solutions; the need for beter planning and reporting; new infrastructures; smart technology to help overcome the global competition for talent; increased urban (campus) population; and pressure on existing infrastructures. We know from research that students are increasingly basing their application and enrolment decisions on an institution’s commitment

The tenet of any university centres on knowledge, technology, sciences and development.

to sustainability and innovation. There is nothing more visible and impactful that your college can do than highlight its environmental credentials with no capital funding.” BigBelly has witnessed many benefits

from working with MIT since 2010, the biggest being the reduction in staff collection time from six hours a day to less than 30 minutes. BigBelly SmartBin has managed to help both MIT and other universities by becoming the backbone of their sustainability goals while reinforcing their commitment to recycling and sustainability. Robert Philip of Aberdeen University

recently said: “We have been using the Big Belly Street Compactors since 2010 and have been increasing the number of units on an annual basis. Our Grounds Team love the Big Belly Bins and, in particular, the Telemetry fill level alerts we receive directly from the compactors. It provides our entire operations with additional hours for other tasks and besides the reduction in collections we have found a marked reduction in liter scatering and related liter picking requirements.” Continuing the BigBelly approach

to innovation and technology with the future availability of Wi-Fi hotspots around the campus and the upcoming roll-out of Static and Live-Screen displays for sharing public information and adverts, the future is sustainable with the BigBelly SmartBin. UB
