Day in the Life...
After spending his entire working life in production roles, with the last 28 years spent at HL Display’s vast manufacturing facility in Harlow, it’s safe to say that Steve Peglar, the company’s Senior Production Manager, is about as experienced as they come. This stands him in good stead for a role that involves coordinating numerous projects of varying sizes, all of which need to be delivered on time every time. Steve Peglar is Senior Production Manager for POS, POP, bespoke and standard products at HL Display's Harlow facility.
Day in the Life…
Steve arrives in the office at around 7:30am ready to catch up with emails and review the activity scheduled for the day ahead. With six production areas to oversee including CNC Machinery, Vacuum Forming, Injection Moulding, Metalwork, Powder Coating and the Print Shop, all producing parts for a number of different projects, Steve begins the day ensuring that everything is on track and that resources and capacity across all areas is being managed efficiently.
Steve comments “Our manufacturing facility is often running 24 hours a day to make sure that we can deliver against our client’s required timescales. Therefore my first task in the morning is to check that everything is on schedule and no issues have arisen overnight. Timing is everything to the production team. I have an experienced group of managers in charge of each area I oversee and we are all very aware of the fact that if we do not deliver the entire success of a project is jeopardised.”
He continued “Retail is a high pressure,
fast‐paced environment and I’m very lucky in that I have a team that understands this and is totally committed to supporting clients by
providing an efficient service and high quality end products. We also have excellent facilities to help us to do this. Both the team and our equipment has to be on the ball at all times, because large projects can and do come in at short notice and need to be turned around within a very tight deadline.”
HL Display’s ability to respond to briefs when time is precious is partly due to the work Steve and his team do day to day and is one of the reasons the company has such a strong reputation within the industry. The production and sales teams work closely together to ensure that everyone is fully aware of what each project involves and what needs to be achieved at all times. Steve will also attend several production meetings each day to discuss projects that are on the horizon, which enables him to then ensure the correct resources are in place across the production areas involved.
After arriving in the office and checking through emails the vast majority of Steve’s day is spent visiting the areas under his supervision, to make sure there are no problems with staffing levels, breakdowns or materials shortages, or liaising with his own managers and HL Display’s other Senior Production Managers. Communication is vital across all departments involved in delivering a project, to ensure everyone has a thorough understanding of the brief and is also aware of changes required after a production run has started.
One of the most challenging parts of Steve’s job, and the part that he most enjoys, is working against the odds to deliver a campaign on time. For example, a recent project took three times more time to complete than was originally planned for because of changes to
