Payment Systems

PINs and the use of it in the new Apple iPhone 5s may herald a future of more secure payments. Individual fingerprint data is locked away inside the processor chip, with the result that it cannot be accessed by software, and is not transmitted or stored elsewhere. “What makes this the potential game‐ changer in‐store is that it allows easy, low‐cost adoption by retailers of any size, bringing mobility to the mass‐market at the touch of a finger.” James Pepper, Technical Director at Vista Retail Support. All these advancements should mean quicker, simpler transactions for consumers, meaning retail staff have more time for customer service and consumers have more time for browsing. Retailers need to remember that the key to any advancement is that they have to improve the service and offer the whole package. Any digital or mobile payment that doesn’t offer every functionality that the consumers’ wallet already offers may not be embraced fully.
