Westford Mill sponsors Carbon Literacy Project
ags For Life brand, Westford Mill has sponsored the launch of the Manchester Carbon Literacy Project. The training initiative aims to promote a low carbon future by offering everyone who works, lives or studies in the city of Manchester, access to a dayʼs worth of learning on ʻCarbon Literacyʼ, over a three- year period. The Projectʼs public launch took place at the Manchester Arndale centre, and included a ʻgreen graduation ceremonyʼ attended by Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester City Council, and Professor John Brooks, vice chancellor of Manchester Metropolitan University. Professor John Brooks presented 24
ʻgreen graduatesʼ from workplace, education and community with symbolic green ʻgraduationʼ scrolls and green mortar-boards during the event. Westford Mill is the founding sponsor of the new initiative. Roger McHugh, managing director, comments: “Westford Mill fully supports the aims of the Manchester Carbon Literacy Project, which are consistent with our own brand values. We are delighted to have been instrumental in helping to launch the project and are excited at the prospect of Manchester becoming the worldʼs first Carbon Literate city. Our sponsorship of the Manchester Carbon Literacy Project not only demonstrates our long-held
commitment to promoting environmental issues, but also provided us with a unique opportunity to be part of an initiative that has the potential to make a very real difference to the future of the planet.” Led by Cooler Projects CIC on behalf of the city of Manchester, the Manchester Carbon Literacy Project has been under development for over one and a half years and has established a Manchester Carbon Literacy Standard for basic low-carbon education that works for all audiences, from school to workplace to community. The training has been tested with 50 pilot organisations over the last nine months. Eventually, there is scope for the initiative to be rolled out to other cities in the UK and further afield. ■ Visit
