New frigates for Royal Danish Navy A
S part of the 2005-2009 Defence Agreement in Denmark, three Niels Juels
class corvettes are to be replaced by three multi-mission frigates. The frigates, costing approximately 4.7 billion - including the communications, weapons, and sensor package - will be highly capable units with AAW, ASUW, ASW capabilities, and able to operate worldwide in sustained operations in harsh environments and under significant threats. The frigates will be based on the same hullform
as the Absalon class combat support ship previously described in Warship Technology, which, the Royal Danish Navy notes, have already demonstrated convincing performance and excellent seakeeping capabilities. The 5850tonne design-to-cost frigates will be
tailor-made to take part in maritime operations in support of global scale expeditionary- style crisis response operations. In overseas operations the patrol ships will provide area air defence coverage for mission-essential maritime units or for Army or Special Forces operations ashore. There will be dedicated staff facilities for task group commander – be it the national Commander Danish Task Group or a NATO force commander. The design phase was completed by the end
of 2006 and the construction phase recently got underway at Odense Steel Shipyard Ltd in Denmark.

The three frigates will be built by the yard
in the period 2008-2011. All three units will be commissioned and fully operational for global deployments by the end of 2012. The contract between the Danish Naval Material Command and Odense Steel Shipyard Ltd was signed late last year. The patrol vessels will be approximately 138.7m in length with a beam of 19.8m. At the end of December 2006, the Naval Materiel Command (NMC) announced that it had selected the Mk 41 Vertical Launching System (VLS) for the new frigates.
will provide four Mk 41 VLS Baseline VII below-deck missile launcher modules for each of three new ships. The Mk 41 launcher's capabilities have
been continuously upgraded through a series of product improvement initiatives. The most recent baseline, MK 41 VLS Baseline VII, features an upgrade to the system's module electronics, enabling improved life-cycle maintenance through a cell-based architecture, using commercial off-the-shelf technologies and open architecture. GPV has signed a contract with the Dutch part
of the Thales group regarding the production of modules for radar systems for the new frigates. The order covers technology to be employed in the ship’s APAR multi-function radar and SMART-L surveillance radar. Thales Nederland entered into an agreement to deliver radar systems to the Royal Danish Navy in December 2006.
The 5850tonne frigates will be tailor-made to take part in maritime operations in support of global crisis response operations.
