shorten the missiles’ stay in the en- emy’s anti-missile defense zone. At first glance supersonic missiles offer some advantages here. How- ever, the 3M-24E subsonic low- size missiles can compete with supersonic missiles. They feature very low flight altitude (not above 3 meters). The supersonic missiles feature much higher flight altitude which is from 5 up to 20 meters. It has to be taken into consideration that reliable detection at required ranges of small-size ASMs flying at altitude less than 4-5 meters arises a lot of problems for modern ship- borne electronic systems. Besides, subsonic missiles feature more competitive weight characteristics. Their weight is 3-4 times less than weight of supersonic missiles while range of flight and combat payload

system features capacity to receive and process data in-coming from the central command post and external airborne sources.

are almost the same. Lower dimen- sions mean lower visibility. The Bal-E mobile coast defense sys- tem has proved to be the most expe- rienced system among mentioned above. After successful state accept- ance trials in autumn of 2004 the Bal- E entered service with the Russian Navy. Development of the Bal-E system implemented ideology of tactical reconnaissance-striking system. In addition to own target detection electronic means the combat control

The system features capacity to fire at ranges up to 120 km while be- ing located 10 km far from coastal line. The launchers can be located at positions hiding behind covering terrain. All the elements of the system are fitted on automobiles featuring high off-road capacity with speed of up to 60 km/h at highways. Night vi- sion, navigation and topographical devices ensure deployment of the system on a new position within 10 minutes.

The system can be additionally equipped with jammers ensuring frustration of guidance of opposing guided systems in radar and optical aiming channels. Thus, in the real combat environment the system be- comes almost invulnerable. Four launchers of the Bal-E system are capable of firing a salvo of up to 32 missiles. Besides, automated target distribution system ensures simultaneous (and from different positions) fire at several targets (up to 6). The whole ammunition load can be used against most vital tar- gets. Given difficulties of detect- ing the 3M-24E missiles the current anti-missile defense of majority of existing warships can not withstand such an attack. Already in 30 min- utes after the first salvo the Bal-E system can be re-loaded and make the follow up salvo. It is worth mentioning that combat charges’ total weight of the Bal-E salvo surpasses into 2 times salvo of the Brah- mos launcher – 1150 kg vs 600 kg.
