Foreword

Chairman of Hurlingham Polo Association Nicholas Colquhoun-Denvers

Dear Members,

The 2011 season is upon us once again and it seems to have arrived with amazing rapidity, and so I am requested by Madame Editor to write the foreword for the magazine. This year I will be wearing two hats, one being that of the HPA and the other as HPC.

From an HPA point of view there has been a lot of travelling during the winter months and it always amazes me to see just how global our sport has become in my short lifetime. Familiar faces popping up from Beijing to Buenos Aires and it has been a fascinating experience to watch players grow, improve and mature over the years.

Annie and I have been lucky enough to continue polo throughout the off-season, sadly though, seldom in the saddle! Thailand, China, Dubai, Ghana and Argentina for FIP meetings and the Open, and where we also had an amazing short trip out to see Jeremy and Liliana Baker and a few Ham Members at their lovely estancia Puesto Viejo, just outside BA, a true `home away from home’. We were delighted to hear that he had designed it along the lines of the HPC.

Back in the UK we have attended the Arena Nationals fi nal and the Gold Cup where we were delighted to see Heiko Volker and his team notch up his third win, well done Tchogan! Then on to the new HPA venture, Polo at the O2, generously promoted and sponsored by Gaucho under direction of Martin Williams and his team.

Then suddenly my HPC hat is back on and we are all into the serious preparations for the 2011 season ahead – it would be a hard task if it was not for my passion for our sport!

We all had a great fun and friendly season last year and I do not remember when the grounds looked as good by the end of the season, which will give us a great start for this year. Lots of new membership enquiries, new Committee Members and hopefully lots of new ideas should make for a bright start to this new season. The `credit crunch’ brought with it a few administrative problems on the fi nancial front last year, but everyone’s passion for polo seems to be totally undiminished – long may it continue.

We are told that we are in a time of obstacles and diffi culties everywhere we look these days and yet our obsession with polo continues. They are just other challenges to be faced and overcome to enjoy the passion for sport we cherish.

May I take this opportunity to wish you all a safe and enjoyable 2011 season.
