“That boy on the other team is very rude and ought to be sent off!”

There comes a time in an evening when it all starts to get a little out of hand and thankfully Benjie, with cane in hand and wearing his School Masters robe and mortarboard, effectively called the assembly to attention. He then proceeded to show some evidential coverage of moments on the polo fi eld where sometimes the rules are pushed just a little too far. These moments deserve to be awarded.

The Silly Awards went to: THE BON PANTALON AWARD to Anneliese for the whitest tightest, sexiest polo pants on the fi eld. There was stiff competition from Paul Eberts for his bright pink pants and Howard Davis’ very trendy but roomy whites. Hannah was voted as having the cutest butt in whites.

THE ABSURD CHUKKA REQUEST AWARD to a member of the instructional group who wishes to remain anonymous. I don’t believe ‘Fast’ and ‘Instructional’ belong together when requesting an instructional chukka. We may need to suggest adding a stage 2 instructional this year.

THE BEST COMMENT MADE ON THE FIELD was by Hugo Davis; whilst 7 goals down in the 4th chukka of the Cowdray game he told the umpires ‘that boy on the other team is very rude and ought to be sent off.’ He was referring to a 35-year old South African 4 goaler. Nice try.

THE SPAGHETTI RIDE-OFF AWARD could only go to Paul de Rivas and Alex Dowie. Don’t try this in 2011.

THE MOST MEMORABLE DISMOUNT was won by Adolfo for falling off 3 times in the same match, whilst umpiring.

5:15 GOLD CUP AWARD WINNER was Oberoi Polo Team for taking the last match on a Sunday a little too seriously. They were being led onto the fi eld by a brand new Lamborghini.

The London Polo Club 39

A SPECIAL AWARD to Ben De Rivaz for his vigorous determination whilst policing the safety zones at one recent HAC match.

The end of the season brought with it tired ponies, aching backs and stretched bank accounts, but for me 2010 has been the most enjoyable of all my nine years of living in UK In polo I have found a passion which I share with a great group of people.

One of the most wonderful things I discovered, whilst spending the past seven weeks in New Zealand and three weeks in Argentina, is that the polo community has the same faces, same names whether you are in the UK, Australia, New Zealand or Argentina. There is always a familiar face to help you - in your game or buying ponies. That’s Polo!

With all the turmoil and suffering going on in the world, let our hearts go out to all the people affected by the events in Libya and neighbouring countries, the unbelievably destructive fl oods and cyclones in Australia, the Japan Tsunami and the massively devastating earthquake in my own home city of Christchurch not to forget all the other dramatic goings on in our rather volatile and vulnerable world.

At times like this we can all be thankful for Polo.
