like being at something similar to a movie premiere! It’s times like these you wish you had a cool interesting signature. What an experience to be there with these kids who just wanted someone to sign their polo ball or to stroke Benjie Davis’ luscious hair, or to shake the Chairman’s hand to say well done. Needless to say, although defeated by a narrow margin on the fi eld, we were to continue through the evening undefeated with several different groups of followers we had picked up on the way. I think by the end of the night we were well spread out over Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
Day 4 Sunday
I think by this stage of the trip, Annie, Nicholas, William and Lowie were getting used to seeing the three of us slowly roll outside looking pretty rough as their reactions were becoming less surprised and more routine. What we didn’t realise is that we were in for the toughest afternoon yet. I thought we had managed to get out of the traditional competition to drink a cocktail called a ‘Mind-Eraser’. Little did we know that this had all been organised for us and it was to start at brunch. Where else to return to but Zelda’s!? I think we managed to do about eight each before it was defi nitely time to leave and undertake one of the highlights of the trip!
We were so lucky in being given the chance to go sailing on an old America’s Cup yacht around Newport. Luckily there were professionals aboard to man the boat and give us the tour as we sailed round, as I don’t think we would have been able to tell the difference from the front or the back of the boat. It was exhilarating cruising around the bay in this fantastic vessel. Now I know how people in this town fall in love with sailing!
To top that all off that evening we were treated to a fantastic lobster bake at Dan Keating’s place by the ocean in the sunset. It was the most beautiful setting for our last evening which was fi lled with exotic tequilas and karaoke.
Day 5 Monday
All good things must come to an end, but what better way to say farewell to Newport than right on the harbour with the team and William and Lowie. Once again, on our return to Boston airport, Ben and Benjie attempted to get upgrades by wearing suits and trying to show the Kiwi up but again they were asked to pay for it so the satisfaction was all mine. Thanks must go to everybody who hosted us so generously in Newport, especially including William and Lowie, Jim Garner and Dan and Agnes.
Thank you very much to Nicholas and Annie, who gave us this fantastic invitation to join them in their annual trip to paradise.
