PASPALEY POLO in the City

International Liaison Officer... Liaising Article by John Rendall

SYDNEY-BASED PLAYERS GERARD FOLEY AND NICK WAYLAND WITH HAM’S INTERNATIONAL LIAISON OFFICER

JOHN RENDALL AT THE ‘PASPALEY POLO IN

THE CITY’ TOURNAMENT,

CENTENNIAL PARK SYDNEY. How lucky are we members of Ham Polo Club?

So close to central London, yet within manageable distances from other clubs, and convenient for their visiting teams. In Australia watching polo involves serious long distance

travel, particularly for the inter-state matches.

To compensate for these vast distances between polo grounds, and to bring polo to more people (it is a fi ve hour drive from Sydney to the Packer family’s Ellerston grounds at Scone), Ruki Baillieu and Janek Gazecki decided to bring polo to the centre of the major Australian cities. Now in it’s 5th year the ‘Polo in the City’ tournaments are sponsored by Australia’s leading pearling company, Paspaley and matches are held in Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane and Sydney.

Among the spectators at Centennial Park for the tournament were a number of people familiar to Ham members, John Wayland, Chairman of Windsor Polo Club outside Sydney (and father of James who has played at Ham) Nick Wayland, Nerida Piggin, Lyndie Hemery and Peter and Rebecca Higgins, founders of the Sydney Polo Club where all Ham members visiting Sydney are welcome.
