Childine Event THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS

Article by Yasmin Ibrahim

‘If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is because everything would be what it isn’t. And contrary-wise; what it is it wouldn’t be, and what it wouldn’t be, it would. You see?’ Alice from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Picture the scene: a beautiful summer’s evening, ponies on manicured polo fields, a White Rabbit, a Mad Hatter, a Cheshire Cat, a Red Queen and a menagerie of wild, outlandish and whimsical Lewis Carroll characters. Ham Polo Club was quite simply an idyllic and very appropriate setting for the Alice in Wonderland themed ChildLine Polo Fundraiser.

This is the third year running I have been coming to this fabulous event and I have to say how brilliantly organised and worthwhile an event it is. ChildLine was launched back in 1986 and does amazing work to raise money to help children in distress or danger. This event provides the perfect situation to raise money for such a worthwhile and important charity while the members of the Polo Club and their guests enjoy a balmy summer evening.

My friend Tia, a committee member, has told me how many hours of work goes into the preparation of the event, from the dressing of the venue, to choosing the theme, to organising the auction prizes and all the fabulous entertainment. And fabulous Annie is always there to ensure the evening runs smoothly (as it always does).

What strikes me every year is how magical the start of the evening is when we stand, champagne flutes in hand, the polo begins and the evening gets off to a flying start. Then ‘Drink me’ cocktails, the delicious food and the auction which always raises more than the previous one. Recession or no

recession. Although I shouldn’t really be surprised as it’s for such a good cause.

I cannot wait for the next one…
