Random drawcould

swingWCAC playoffs No. 8 Good Counsel’s 50-38

victory overNo. 10 Gonzaga makes it likely that a random drawwill decide the top three seeds in theWashington Catholic Athletic Conference playoffs. And it’s possible another

random drawcould decide the fourth seed in the league’s four- team postseason tournament as well.

While the drawing for theNo.

4 spot – possibly between Carroll, St. John’s and Paul VI Catholic – would decide which of the three teams advances to the playoffs and which two are done for the year, the other drawing could play a larger role in determining the league champion. The winner of the drawing for

first place – which will be required if Good Counsel, Gonzaga andNo. 7 DeMatha all win their regular season finales – would get a much easier path to theWCAC championship game, playing at home against the fourth seed in the semifinals. Meantime, the second and third seeds in a league with three elite teams would be left to fight it out in the semifinals. DeMatha, Good Counsel and

Gonzaga all finished 1-1 against each other, with DeMatha beating Good Counsel, 31-28, and losing to Gonzaga, 32-25. All

three teams are 7-2 overall, 5-1 in the league. “It is what it is, I don’t know if

there is a better way to do it than that,” Gonzaga Coach Aaron Brady said. “I guess there isn’t. Maybe go by total points scored? At the end of the day, you’ve got to beat the other teams anyway.” If it happens, it would be the

second time in four years that a drawdetermined theWCAC’s top seed in the playoffs. In 2007, DeMatha won the drawing, leaving Good Counsel to play St. John’s in the league tournament’s semifinals. As for fourth place, St. John’s

and Carroll are 3-3 in league play entering the final week of the season. Carroll could secure its spot by upsetting Good Counsel (the Lions hold a head-to-head tiebreaker over the Cadets by virtue of a 13-6 victory earlier this season), while St. John’s could get in if it beats Gonzaga and Carroll loses. However, if both teams lose and Paul VI Catholic beats O’Connell, the Panthers could join Carroll and St. John’s at 3-4, necessitating another random draw.

Forestville’s Smith excels

During the week, as the commandant of cadets at ForestvilleMilitary Academy, Ricardo Smith has perhaps the most unique job of any student in theWashington area.He has

to monitor the student body, make sure everyone attends their ROTC class and checks uniforms, among other duties. “He has an office, gets to sit in

on some administrative meetings,” Knights Coach CharlesHarley said. On Saturday, Smith turned in

one of the area’s most unique performances on the football field, intercepting three passes and returning them all for touchdowns in a 53-0 victory over FairmontHeights. The senior cornerback had a 35- yarder in the first quarter, and 85- and 70-yarders in the third quarter. He has 10 interceptions this

season and is being recruited by several division I-AA programs. “He threwa pass over the

receiver’s head and I looked the ball in, then it seemed like nobody tried to chase me,” Smith said of the first interception return. “The next two, everybody was like, ‘Oh, you’re not getting another one.’ ” With the victory, Forestville

(5-4, 3-4 Prince George’s 3A/2A/1A) closed in on its fifth consecutive postseason berth. The Knights likely will qualify for theMaryland 1A South Region playoffs if they beat Largo (3-6) on Friday, but their season will be over if they lose. “Our playoffs start this week,”

Harley said. —Josh Barr
