WEST Pass

All Pass FRANK AND ERNEST

his week’s deals treat preserving options as

declarer. Say you land at six spades, and West leads a heart. You seem to have two chances: You must pick up the trumps or win the club finesse. You take the ace of hearts and lead a trump: six, queen, deuce from West. The actual declarer saw no problem: He led his deuce of diamonds to dummy’s king and returned a second trump ... and East discarded. South took the ace and led a third trump, but West won and exited with a diamond. Since dummy had no more entries, South lost a club. West’s philosophy was

“We’ll double-cross that bridge when we come to it.” Against a tricky defender, South should lead a diamond to the king at Trick Three, then discard the ace of diamonds on the queen of hearts. South next leads a trump to his ace and another trump. West wins but is end-played. If he leads a diamond, South takes the queen, pitching a club. He pitches another club on the last high heart and gets home when the club finesse wins. DAILY QUESTION You hold: ♠ 7 5 4 ♥ A Q J ♦ K Q ♣ Q J 7 5 3 You are the dealer. What is your opening call? ANSWER: If your partner-

ship’s range for a 1NT open- ing bid is 16 to 18 points, you’ll open one club. But even if I were using a range of 15 to 17 points, I’d avoid opening 1NT. The hand has only one ace and one king and no high spots. Most of the honors are stuck in short suits, and the long suit is poorish. I’d downgrade the

hand and open one club. — F
