Whitey. Every raver’s mortal enemy and yet intimate acquaintance, Baz. To Baz (or to pull a ‘whitey’), verb: The result of a subject taking too many drugs and sketching out or making themselves sick. Mostly occurs amongst lightweights and first- timers. (Cheers, urban dictionary). Admit it, lightweight or not, we’ve all been there. Even the most seasoned party animal had a first time, while hard core pill poppers are just as likely to cross that nebulous Baz threshold. Mr A, who guzzled 25 beans a day for 4 years (fact – Google it) and forgot pretty much everything, is surely the biggest Baz of all? And he’s clearly no lightweight. No
Celia Garforth
one wants to be Mr A, but is a moderate portion of Baz really so bad? Irksome physical symptoms aside, for some groups ‘who can Baz the hardest/ longest/ most ridiculously’ has become a coveted prize; a status-snatching game of one-up-man-ship that provides timeless jokes and rallying memories. ‘Remember that time at Glasto when Gaz munched all his supplies on the first night and Bazzed 5 times in a row?’ (Insert raucous laughter and matey back slapping here). This is the stuff from which legends are made, not to mention the sense of camaraderie Bazzing can create. Nothing forms bonds faster than holding a mate’s hair back as they spew into a plastic pint glass, stumbling home early with them to chat shit, or huddling outside a festival tent trying to regain your brain with the other Baz cadets. ‘Feeling
ropey?’ ‘Yeah mate, Bazzing all over the shop.’ ‘Oooufff, me too!’ Instantaneous new
bessie mates.
