Elaine D. Simons D.C. TEACHER


Elaine D. Simons, 84, a retired teacher and counselor who worked in D.C. public schools for more than 20 years, died June 23 at Providence Hospital in Washington after a heart attack. Mrs. Si- mons began her teaching career at a high school in Baltimore.

She began teaching in Washing- ton in 1957, when she became an English teacher at Garnet-Pat- terson Junior High School. She later taught for several years at Langley Junior High School be- fore becoming a counselor at Kelly Miller Junior High School in 1969. She retired from that po- sition in 1981. Elaine Valerie Davis was a


Washington native and a 1943 graduate of Dunbar High. She re- ceived a bachelor’s degree from the District’s Miner Teachers Col- lege in 1947 and in 1960 received a master’s degree in counseling from American University. She was a member of St.


George’s Episcopal Church in Washington, where she was a senior warden and a member of the Lectors Guild. She organized and led a collaborative effort of St. George’s and Gage Eckington Elementary School to provide young people with after-school tutoring and summer camping experiences. Survivors include her husband of 61 years, former Washington Teachers’ Union president Wil- liam H. Simons of the District; and two daughters, Sheryl P. Si- mons of Philadelphia and Wilma L. Simons of Lawrenceville, Ga. — Emma Brown

HURT JOHN CLIFTON HURT


Of Annandale VA, 66, died May 16, 2010 in Winchester, VA, from lung cancer. He is survived by his sisters, Barbara Larson, Patricia MacDonald; and his brother Robert Hurt. He is also survived by three nieces; two nephews; one great nephew. John was retired from Fairfax County and was very active in the support community.


John was a Radar Man Second Class while serving on active duty in the Navy from 1960 to 1964. While on active duty John earned a Good Conduct Medal and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for his participation in the Cuban Quarantine dur- ing the Cuban Missile Crisis.


He was given a military burial in Quantico National Cemetery on May 28, 2010.


The memorial service celebrating his life will be on July 10, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Sleepy Hollow Methodist Church, Falls Church,VA, The service will be led by Pastor Pamela Clark Egan
