Classify the Words and Choose the Correct Words
OBJECTIVES Students will C demonstrate knowledge of vocabu- lary words by grouping them with related words.
C demonstrate word knowledge by completing sentences.
GUIDE STUDENTS For the first activity, encourage stu- dents to read the words given, decide what they have in common, name the category, and then choose the vocabulary word that fits in that category. You might model this approach to the first item: I read the words, and I decide they are related to being sneaky or doing things that are sly or deceitful. I will write the word duplicity in the blank because it has these meanings.
For the second activity, encourage students to try both word choices in each sentence before selecting one.
PRACTICE
Have students complete both activi- ties independently. Then ask them to share and discuss their answers with partners.
Word Play Crack the Code
Have students be word detectives by cracking this code to find the hidden message:
CNVJQWIJ VJG CEEQORNKEG FKF PQV RGTRGVTCVG VJG
ETKOG, UJG YCU
NKCDNG HQT UQOG QH KVU TGUWNVU.
If needed, you may supply these starting clues: c = a, d = b, e = c.
Although the accomplice did not perpetrate the crime, she was liable for some of its results. The code letters are two letters deeper into the alphabet than the letter given.
