GUIDE STUDENTS

Review the words on page 198 by having students use each one in a sentence. Point out that the first exercise on page 199 requires them to associate word meanings with various types of clues, and only one correct answer is possible.

The second activity requires students to answer questions or follow direc- tions; therefore, a range of correct answers is possible.

PRACTICE

TAKING INVENTORY: POSTTEST Assess students’ knowledge of the vocabulary words and skills in Part 3 by using the Part 3 Posttest on page T257. Answers: 1. legally responsible 2. fair or unprejudiced 3. to bring together two opposing sides 4. not harsh 5. to repay in injury or insult 6. a violation 7. to settle or resolve 8. lessening the seriousness of a crime by providing an excuse 9. a final statement of terms 10. to free from blame.

If students find the first activity diffi- cult, suggest that they do the second activity first, eliminate the words used in items 6 through 10 from the Word List, and then tackle the first activity. For the second activity, stu- dents may find it helpful to talk with partners about possible responses to some or all of the items before they record them.

Write It! Suggest that stu- dents work with partners to create their dialogue. Remind them to incorporate vocabulary words during the planning stage. If you wish, provide options for presenting the dia- logue, such as in traditional paragraph form, in a script, or in cartoon frames and speech balloons.
