Apply What You’ve Learned Answer the Questions

OBJECTIVES Students will C demonstrate word knowledge through deep processing.

C apply their knowledge of the words to answer questions.

C apply new vocabulary skills to speaking.

GUIDE STUDENTS Explain that this activity requires stu- dents to apply their knowledge of the vocabulary words by answering ques- tions that begin with what, when, where, why, and how. Their answers do not need to be complete senten- ces; however, they must provide enough context to reflect their knowledge of the boldfaced term. Note that there is no single correct answer for each question.

PRACTICE

Invite students to share their responses to the questions with a small group and talk about the answers that best reflect the meaning of each bold- faced term. Have each group share its best responses with the class.

Learning Styles Visual/Spatial Using Concept Maps

Invite students to explore the meaning of the word accomplice by creating a Concept Map. They will place the word accomplice in the center and answer the following questions in surrounding circles: What is it? What is it like? What are some examples? What are some non-examples? Additional graphic organizers are available on the Word Wisdom CD-ROM.

Speak It! Remind students to begin with prewriting, which might take the form of brainstorming. Suggest that they focus on rules that lend themselves to incorporating the vocabulary words.
