OBJECTIVES Students will C use context clues, knowledge of word parts, and prior knowledge to define words in context.

C use dictionary skills to check their definitions.

GUIDE STUDENTS Read the Word List and explain that each word relates to this unit’s theme, Law and Order. Read the three steps for learning the meaning of an unknown word. If necessary, refer to page 183 to review the Read, Look, Think, Predict, and Check process for using the context clues strategy. Read the directions with stu- dents, reminding them that they may use one or more strategies to find the meaning of each word. Also remind students to use a dictionary if context clues and word part knowl- edge do not provide enough information.

PRACTICE

Have students complete page 197 independently. Ask volunteers to give their definitions and explain how they arrived at them. Discuss the similarities and differences between students’ definitions and those in the dictionary.

Enrichment Multiple Meanings

Discuss the meaning of liable in this lesson: “legally responsible.” Then have students use their diction- aries to find another meaning for liable: “subject to, likely to.” Explain that liable is often used as a stand-alone adjective, as in The judge decided the teen was liable, or followed by for, as in The teen was liable for the costs of the repairs. When used in the sense of “likely,” liable is often followed by an infinitive, as in The woman was liable to repeat the behavior. Encourage students to create a Multiple- Meaning Map for the word liable. You may wish to print Multiple-Meaning Maps from Unit 3 of the Word Wisdom CD-ROM.
