OBJECTIVES Students will C learn the Latin roots sta, stit, ple, pli, plic, jud, jur, and jus.
C group vocabulary words according to their Latin roots.
GUIDE STUDENTS Have students read the Word List on page 190. Tell them that all of these words contain one of the Latin roots introduced on this page. Some stu- dents may be able to make connec- tions between these roots and the languages they speak at home or are learning at school. For example, they may relate the Spanish word jurar, meaning “to swear,” to the Latin root jur. Similarly, they may relate Spanish words such as juramento (oath), jurídi- co (legal), justamente (justly, fairly), justicia (justice), or justo (fair, just) to the unit theme of Law and Order.
PRACTICE
Review students’ completed word sorts and list the other words they added to the sort, which might include stationery, constituent, applica- ble, pliable, multiple, jury, juror, judge, and justice.
Many English words have Latin roots. Knowing the meanings of roots can help you understand the meanings of many words. Some of the words you studied in Part 1 have Latin roots. Each root below is related to law and order.
Latin Root: sta, stit meaning: to stand English word: circumstantial

Latin Root: ple, pli, plic meaning: to fold English word: compliance
meaning: in obedience to or agreement with
Latin Root: jud, jur, jus meaning: right, law, to swear English word: injurious meaning: harmful
