Context Clues Strategy Look for How Something Is Done


EXAMPLE: After writing the problem on the chalkboard, the teacher pivoted around and faced the class.


CLUE: The words around and faced the class tell how the teacher pivoted. So you can guess that pivoting is a way of turning.


As you read, you often come across new words. Many times you can understand these words by looking carefully at their context. Here are the steps for using this context clues strategy to figure out the meaning of the word utilize from the article about math.

GUIDE STUDENTS


Remind students that so far they have learned five different context clues strategies to figure out the meanings of new words. Now they will learn a sixth strategy. Students will use the Five-Step Process to apply this strategy.


Have a volunteer read aloud the Example sentence. Ask students which words in the sentence give clues to the meaning of pivoted. (around and faced the class) Discuss these clue words before having stu- dents check their responses in the Clue sentence. Be sure students understand that the words around and faced the class explain how pivot- ing is done. So the word pivoted must mean “turned.”
