MEASUREMENT 4 Review Categorize the Words

OBJECTIVE Students will C sort vocabulary words according to parts of speech: adjectives, nouns, and verbs.

GUIDE STUDENTS

Explain to students that in this activ- ity they will use their knowledge of the vocabulary words and parts of speech to complete a graphic organ- izer. If necessary, ask volunteers to define different parts of speech and to give examples. Then have a stu- dent read aloud the directions and the three parts of speech shown in the boxes. Suggest that as students review the words in the Word List on page 134 they jot down adj., n., or v. next to each word to indicate whether the word is an adjective, noun, or verb. Point out that two words (minor, imperative) could appear in two places. If they are not sure of a word’s part of speech, they can put a question mark. Then when they do the activity, they can quick- ly see which words they need to check in the dictionary.

PRACTICE

Have students complete this activity independently or with a partner. When they have finished, have stu- dents share their responses with the class.

Word Wisdom CD-ROM For reinforcement, reteaching,

or enrichment, use the Word Wisdom CD-ROM. First, select the vocabulary words and definitions that are appropriate for each student’s needs. Print out the word cards for students to use on their own or in small- group activities. Install the Word Wisdom CD-ROM for more informa- tion and ideas.
