Use Context Clues

OBJECTIVES Students will C use context clues and their own prior knowledge to find the meanings of new words.

C use the Word Wisdom Dictionary to check word meanings.

C add to their Word Journals. GUIDE STUDENTS

Explain that using context clues as well as their own prior knowledge and experience can help them under- stand new words. Refer students to the Word List on page 119 to help them complete column one. If neces- sary, review the Five-Step Process on page 117. Encourage students to use context clues from the article to pre- dict word meanings in column two. Make sure that students know to write down their own definitions in column two before checking the dic- tionary.

PRACTICE

Have students complete page 119 independently. When they are fin- ished, allow volunteers to share their own word definitions before dis- cussing the dictionary definitions for each word. Discuss the similari- ties and differences between stu- dents’ definitions and the dictio- nary’s definitions.

Word Journal Highlighting Words

Remind students to add words from this unit to their Word Journals. They should record the entire sentence or context in which they encounter each word. Encourage them to highlight, star, or make a check next to any words that they might use to replace overused words in their own writing or speaking. For example, they might star the word plethora to use in place of the often overused words a lot or many. Emphasize that students can use their Word Journals as a source of words and ideas whenever they write.
