OBJECTIVES Students will C learn the Latin roots equ, min, and ple.
C group vocabulary words according to their Latin roots.
GUIDE STUDENTS Have students read the Word List on page 124. Tell them that each word contains one of the Latin roots intro- duced on this page.
Remind students that many lan- guages contain words with Latin roots. Point out that knowing the meanings of Latin roots often helps students studying foreign languages. In addition, the knowledge of Latin roots can help students who are flu- ent in languages such as French, Spanish, or Italian learn English. As an example, write the French word détente on the chalkboard. Explain that this word, which means “an eas- ing of tension,” contains the same root as the English word tension. Knowing that the root ten means “to stretch” can help French-speaking students figure out the meaning of tension and help English-speaking students figure out the meaning of détente.
PRACTICE
After students have completed page 124, encourage volunteers to share and compare their responses with the class.
