C use dictionary skills to answer questions about the pronunciation of vocabulary words.


GUIDE STUDENTS Ask volunteers to read aloud the information at the top of page 130 about using a dictionary to check the pronunciation of a word. Discuss the pronunciation key and the example. Make sure that second-language learners can correctly pronounce the example words in the pronunciation key here. This is the same key they use in the Word Wisdom Dictionary. Point out that occasionally a diction- ary will provide two pronunciations of a word. Both pronunciations are acceptable, but usually the one given first is preferred. As an example, have students look up and discuss equable, a vocabulary word from Part 2 that has two acceptable pronunciations for the initial e.


PRACTICE


Have students complete page 130 independently. You may also wish to look up the words in the Word Wisdom Dictionary as a class and have the students check and discuss their answers.
