THIS MONTH WE are going to start to get into the meat and potatoes of overland- ing. Before we start on a trip—be it a few days or a big multi- week adventure—we


need to understand what is involved so that we do not tackle more than our training, budget and most impor- tantly, experience or “seat time” can


handle. We will focus on the longer trips, but much of the material that we will touch upon will equally apply to your first jour- ney from the safety of home. I will not dwell on first world countries like Europe etc., as travel there is generally not all that challenging, but much of what will be writ- ten will equally apply. Consider this! To set off to parts


unknown is a big decision, and one that is dependent on a number of factors. I am sure that most of you by now have done


some independent traveling by bike for a weekend or even a week, maybe even camped along the way. Now, imagine doing this in a foreign land, where you may be faced with any of the following things we may take for granted at home: • They don’t speak your language. Yes, Eng- lish is a world language, but don’t expect older generations to speak it unless they are educated. In many countries schooling is very rudimentary, and the need to speak another language is not high on their list
