style riding, not about going long distances for the sake of the time and miles. Instead, HU riders are usually not in any rush at all. Their boundaries and limits are more about money than time. They are riding for the experience more than just the miles. They ride to immerse themselves in other cul- tures, loving the joy of new places and peo- ple. The Johnsons’ conviction is that wide ranging travel might be for you, not just oth- ers. Beware. Susan and Grant’s convictions may be contagious and life-changing.

Horizons Unlimited is the organization


that Susan and Grant have assembled to encourage riders to cast off their anchors and chains of fear and trepidation. HU is where riders meet others who are traveling, hear their stories, see their photos, and shake the cobwebs out of their trip plans. The group is international, with travelers’ meetings all over the world. Here in Appo- mattox, a hundred and fifty or so riders gathered to trade stories of the road, share tips and techniques for solving the prob- lems of travel, exchange modification ideas to their motorcycles, and learn how to shed all the unnecessary stuff that first-time travelers overload their bikes with. The real joy of this kind of gathering is that it is entirely non-competitive. You won’t find these riders trying to one up each other. Instead, they contribute and add value to others’ tales. It is a meeting of like-minded riders, but even more, it is a chance to learn how to escape the mundane. The Appomattox meeting included
