IF YOU MADE IT OUT TO BILLINGS, YOU ALREADY KNOW. IF YOU didn’t, well, you missed one heck of a party! A quick photographic look at what happened in Billings begins on page 98, with a full recap next month. Just over 5,800 rally attendees enjoyed a week of beautiful weather that
even saw Mother Nature paint the sky with a couple of late afternoon rain- bows, proving that Billings really is the “Magic City.” Over four days in late July, the MetraPark was alive with the beautiful sound emanating from internal combustion BMW engines creating a
mechanical concerto of pistons, valve trains, intakes and exhausts. We gathered to share stories of our adventures, enjoy the camaraderie of friends old and new, ride some of the most breathtaking roads our beautiful country has to offer and maybe, just maybe, win a door prize! Above everything else, it was the people of Billings and our MOA family that made the 43rd installment of our MOA International Rally truly special. In a week filled with highlights, mine came Thursday evening during the Owners News
Contributors Dinner where we had the opportunity to pay tribute to the volunteer contribu- tors who give so much of their time and talent each month working with Karin and me to create our great magazine. We were blessed to have many of our illustrious contributors with us that evening, includ-
ing Paul and Voni Glaves, Matt and Susanna Parkhouse, Dave Cwi, MOA President Chuck Manley and his wife Julie, Chris “Teach” McNeil, Alisa Clickenger and Deb Gasque, as well as Karol Patzer, Deb Lower, Jim Turley, Roger Wiles and many, many more. Board members of both the MOA and MOA Foundation joined us, as did Rally Chair Sue Rihn and Co-Chairs Jason Olson and Vince Barkhoff. Even Kris Odwarka, Vice President of BMW Motorrad USA, who rode up from Denver aboard a new S 1000 XR, was there to treat us all with his thoughts on the future of BMW Motorrad and tease us by closing with “you ain’t seen nothing yet!” Following our dinner, I had the pleasure of presenting awards to some of our contributors
who continually give more to the readers of BMW Owners News than they’ll ever know. That night, we saluted our best. Marven Ewen was honored as “Best New Contributor” for his Ride Well column. He
shared the award with Chris “Teach” McNeil, author of Teach’s Tricks. While Marven’s column describes strategies each of us can employ to enjoy our riding more, Teach uses his vast stunt riding experience to offer techniques all of us can use to raise our riding skillset. Winner of “Best Feature” was Tom Bunn, author of a two-part feature last winter titled
“Roughing It on the Pony Express Trail.” Tom brought us out of the doldrums of winter as he described his ride with eloquence, beautiful photography and a little Mark Twain. A second winner of “Best Feature” was John Flores who, with the help of an R nineT,
authored three tales of escape to a world outside of New York he didn’t know existed. Finally, we honored a long-time contributor to both the MOA and Owners News. As an
accomplished rider of more than 750,000 miles, a Knochlein award winner and a Friend of the Marque who just happens to be Voni’s mechanic, we thanked Paul Glaves, winner of the “BMW Owners News Award for Exemplary Service.” Memories of that wonderful night continually remind me of the great people I’ve been blessed to be able to work with every day to bring you BMW Owners News.
