Executive Director’s Message Happy New Year By Doug DuBois, Jr. I

believe the saying is true “the older you get, the faster the pages fly off the calendar.” Being over 50 (for a little while) has certainly brought this feeling to bear. As we embrace a new year, we look forward to the opportunities to improve on our performance in 2016, while beginning to plan for our centennial celebration in 2019. As we enter into 2017, please assist us with our membership growth goals by visiting page 19 in this edition of the TSRA Sportsman. There you’ll find the LAST CHANCE for our 2016- 2017 Membership Drive. This is an opportunity to sponsor or refer a new member or 10 and earn the chance to win one of our great gun giveaways. The deadline for all entries is Feb. 17, 2017, so take advantage of this last chance to grow our membership. As you have heard our Legislative Director Alice Tripp state many times “We have strength in numbers” and your assistance is very important.

With 2017 being an odd-numbered

year, this is also a year when the Texas Legislature will be back in session. Your support of the TSRA Political Action Committee provides Alice the tools she needs to work for the fewest restrictions on law-abiding citizens to have our guns. Even with the major success of pro-gun bills in 2015, there will still be work to accomplish in 2017. Please pay attention to the Legislative Alerts Alice sends to subscribers to respond to calls to action, when needed, and if you are not subscribed to receive them, sign up at www.tsra.com. In this issue of the TSRA

Sportsman, we focus on women in shooting sports. It is quite fitting then to highlight our First Vice President, Dorcia Meador, who at the 2017 Annual General Meeting is nominated to become the first female president of the Texas State Rifle Association. As the First Vice- President, Dorcia has been involved

with the leadership of TSRA for eight years, serving through the successive offices of secretary, treasurer, second vice-president and for the past two years, first vice-president. On a professional note, Dorcia was employed by the Fort Worth Police Department in Fort Worth, Texas, for 31 years with the last 14 years serving as the department’s range master. She is now retired and teaching for Safariland Training Group and her own company Precision Pistol Training, LLC. While at the Ft. Worth Police Department she supervised 12 officers and one civilian. Her expertise was called upon during the investigations of all officer involved shootings, department weapon and equipment selection and evaluation. Dorcia holds many state and national shooting titles to include the five-time women’s NRA’s champion honors. She also holds five national records for police pistol combat competitions, five in the 1500 PPC revolver and four national records in Police Pistol Combat. She has taught firearms since 1985 and holds instructor certifications in handgun, shotgun, submachine gun and rifle. She holds instructor certifications in defensive tactics and fitness to include attending the proclaimed F.B.I. Physical Fitness & Defensive Tactics Instructor Schools. She has trained at facilities such as Blackwater Training Center, H and K, Smith & Wesson, NRA, and many more. Dorcia is considered by many as one of the best female police shooters in the United States, respected not only for her shooting abilities but also her knowledge of ballistics, ammunition characteristics, weapon systems and teaching abilities. We are looking forward to her leadership as we head toward our Centennial Celebration in 2019.

Please see our feature on the 2017

Annual General Meeting on page 24 for details on speakers and education sessions. You will not want to miss the Awards Banquet as we recognize our champions and their achievements in national competitions. Leading off the celebration will be the TSRA Foundation Fundraising Event with outstanding items to choose from as we raise funds to support our combined mission of education and training, with primary focus on youth shooting sports. I hope to see you Feb. 24- 25, 2017 at the Austin Marriott North in Round Rock, Texas.
