Over the next year or so, the gaggle of Mini Sure Shots
grew, and by the summer of 2013, we had enough girls between ages five and 12 to put together a training course. Kent Morrison, who owns BSG Security Services and who has been training and supporting Sure Shots since 2011, offered the half-day course at no cost. Seven Mini Sure Shots spent the day learning how to shoot pistols, rifles and shotguns, and ABC News Nightline filmed it for a feature story, garnering us many accolades from around the world. The Mini Sure Shots program kept growing — so many fantastic, well-rounded girls came our way, and ALL were great shooters! I found that young girls are excellent learners. They listen well and they’re extremely methodical, which is a recipe for success in all learning endeavors, but extremely important when dealing with firearms.
Similar to our Sure Shots ladies, our Minis began expressing interest in competitive shooting, so we dove right in — mainly with Steel Challenge matches, since those provide instant gratification when the targets audibly ‘ding!’ and the shooter knows she’s made the shot (as opposed to checking a paper target after the shooter is done shooting the stage). The girls were phenomenal right from the start, and most importantly, had a blast.
From the beginning, Sure Shots has had a network of great companies in the firearms industry who believe in our mission, and always support us in any way they can, so when I approached a handful of companies (Froglube, Lantac, BSG, High Speed Gear, Hard Corps Tactical, and Estrada Tactical) to sponsor three of our girls who were competing regularly and needed jerseys, they agreed immediately, and a little team of Mini Sure Shots competitive shooters were born! I am proud of our junior shooters program, and I’m truly in awe seeing these sweet, intelligent girls take their drive, focus and dedication to excel in a predominantly male sport. I have seen it build their confidence, and their giving tips to their fellow Mini Sure Shots or lending gear, or even goofing off together at matches, is what it’s all about.
