hen I started Sure Shots Women’s Gun Club in 2010, I wanted to create a free, no-pressure community where women of all ages and walks of life could learn how to shoot. Our focus was primarily self-defense-shooting,


but as the club’s numbers grew, we branched out into other shooting genres — competitive, long-range precision, sport shooting, hunting and more. We even began assembling our own rifles in a ‘The Sure Shots AR15 Build Project’ program.


So, just when I thought Sure Shots had covered it all, something awesome happened. Here and there, some of our ladies would tell me their daughters were expressing interest in Sure Shots, and they wanted to know if their girls could join us at practice. While I don’t believe in establishing a minimum age, I did insist on a few conditions before the girls could shoot with us: Participating girls had to be able to know and understand the Four Rules of Gun Safety; safely handle a firearm; and truly want to shoot (as opposed to a parent wanting them to shoot).


Once those conditions were met, I was happy to work with the girls. By design, Mini Sure Shots are starting from a different point than most kids. For one, they are inherently safer, since their moms are Sure Shots and adhere to safe gun handling and storage. Safety and responsible gun handling (and responsible gun ownership) are the pillars of what we do as Sure Shots, so safety is ingrained in these girls. It was never a surprise when a Mini Sure Shot would show up to shoot with us for the first time, already knowing and understanding gun safety, and I can’t recall one who didn’t keep her trigger finger indexed from the very start.
