A recent newspaper article stated that 25


percent of police departments in the U.S. have implemented body-worn cameras. The article goes on to say that 80 per- cent of the remaining departments are considering how the technology will affect their operations. What remains to be seen is how police departments will bring this technology in-house and how successful each will be in turning cameras into powerful policing and management tools. Regardless where your department falls on the ‘considering’ contin- uum, your offi cers are being fi lmed by citizens and the results can go viral in minutes. While it is true that live fi lming of police/public interactions presents complex technological and legal issues, there are areas where it will be wise not to overlook the basics. Getting your offi cers in front of the cameras and utilizing the resulting mate- rial to your department’s advantage makes sense for a number of psychological, risk management, and performance reasons.
