tos, which negates complaints that the detective isn’t choosing similar faces and can even randomize the selection for multiple victims or witnesses. Software that helps manage FOIA

requests and the sending of reports to the prosecutor, management, and even other departments can greatly reduce the workload of trying to do this manu- ally and this will become even more im- portant as more and more departments utilize body cams.

Mobile applications are available that

instantly provide real-time situation critical information to offi cers at the scene, such as important information regarding the subject of their callout. They can make the best safety decisions based on the most accurate and recent data. This instant communication with the offi cer on the street solves another issue that has always existed every day for every police agency and that is the problem of not being able to communi- cate with an offi cer who is out of his car or otherwise away from normal com- munications.

Software programs for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other predictive policing options that look at historical data, police reports, crime lo- cations, and other factors to predict the most likely locations for future crime are being used extensively. Solutions are now available for predictive policing and advanced crime analytics that pro- vide geographic crime visualization and risk forecasting software, showing his- torical and geographic crime patterns. Law enforcement software is prob- ably available for nearly any need a department may have and that is why considering whether it is cost-effective is important. Software is available from everything from sex offender locations and notifi cations to victims to facial recognition and composing facial com- posites. Software is available for camera applications, license plate recognition (LPR), and for things such as reviewing CCTV footage remotely on iPads and other mobile devices.

What is coming in the future in soft- ware? Scarpelli stated they would like to utilize more tablet and smartphone apps in the future. Tarasiuk noted they would like software to make more real- time data available to offi cers in the

fi eld, timely notifi cations that improve offi cer safety. Applications that improve offi cer safety are increasing with soft- ware solutions that help track offi cers’ locations to solutions that notify offi cers in real time of problems in their sector. Predictive policing solutions can hone in on specifi c problem areas.
